European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
