Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
